Tasting Notes

Kilchoman Sanaig Review

Appearance: Deep amber with copper highlights. Natural colour shows the sherry influence. Medium-thick viscosity.

Nose (8.5/10): First 5 seconds: dried dark fruits (raisins, figs, prunes), cooked plum. After 3-5 minutes: orange peel, heather honey, cinnamon. At 10 minutes: fully integrated – BBQ smoke weaves through fruit. Adding water brings jammier berry notes.

Palate (8.5/10): Full-bodied, creamy texture. Dark chocolate and toffee entry, followed by cherries and cranberries. BBQ smoke (earthy, sooty) with charred oak. Brown sugar sweetness balances peat. Roasted nuts mid-palate. Coastal mineral note with sea salt.

Finish (8/10): 50-65 seconds. Phase 1 (0-20s): brown sugar, salted caramel. Phase 2 (20-45s): coastal peat smoke builds, cinnamon intensifies. Phase 3 (45-65s): drying oak tannin, espresso, dark chocolate.

What Surprised Me

The coastal salinity is the hidden key. Most reviews focus on sherry-peat balance. The sea salt note on the mid-palate binds these elements together in a way mainland sherried malts cannot achieve. This maritime influence transforms it from separate flavours into cohesive complexity.

It dramatically improves with air. Week 1: pleasant, worth £50. Week 8: exceptional, worth £60. Cherry and plum notes appeared after four weeks, finish lengthened by 15 seconds.

**Source: The Whisky Exchange – Lagavulin 16

vs Ardbeg Uigeadail: Uigeadail offers higher ABV (54.2%), more intense complexity, and cask strength power. At £70, it’s £13-14 more expensive. For cask strength fans, Uigeadail delivers extra depth worth the premium. For everyday value at standard strength, Sanaig wins.

vs Machir Bay: Machir Bay (90% bourbon, 10% sherry) is lighter and citrus-forward at £48-52. Sanaig (70% sherry, 30% bourbon) is richer and fruit-forward at £56-58. Choose Machir Bay for approachability, Sanaig for complexity.

vs Lagavulin 16: Lagavulin sits close in price (£65) and offers an age statement with classic Islay profile. More balanced and approachable than Sanaig. Choose Lagavulin for prestige and smoothness, Sanaig for sherry richness and better sub-£60 value.

Value Rule: If Uigeadail drops below £65, consider it for intensity. At typical £70 pricing, Sanaig offers better everyday value. If Lagavulin drops below £63, it becomes competitive on the age statement alone.

Serving Recommendations

Kilchoman Sanaig Review

Neat (recommended): 46% is perfectly accessible. Let rest 5-10 minutes.

With water: 3-4 drops soften smoke, bring forward fruit. Texture thins slightly.

On ice: One large cube for hot days. More approachable, fruitier.

Food pairings tested:

  • Aged cheddar (18-24 months): Sharp cheese cuts sweetness, nutty notes complement sherry
  • Dark chocolate (70%+): Mirrors chocolate notes, bitterness balances sweetness
  • Smoked salmon: Oily richness matches texture, smoke-on-smoke surprisingly good

The Kilchoman Story (What Matters to Buyers)

Kilchoman Sanaig Review

Founded 2005 by Anthony Wills, Kilchoman was Islay’s first new distillery in 124 years. Still independent and family-run.

Why independence matters:
Wills controls cask selection and bottling strength. The 46% ABV and non-chill filtration are quality choices, not cost-cutting. Sherry casks personally selected from Bodegas José y Miguel Martín in Spain. Bourbon casks sourced from Breckenridge Distillery, Colorado (since 2023).

Farm-to-bottle: Kilchoman grows barley, malts on-site using traditional floor maltings, distills, matures, and bottles all on location. This control shows in consistent quality.

Kilchoman Sanaig Review FAQ’s

Is it good for beginners?

Better for experienced drinkers. Heavy peat and sherry can overwhelm newcomers. Start with Machir Bay or Highland Park 12.

Is it worth £57 in 2025?

Yes. Exceptional value for sherried Islay at this price. Competes with bottles costing £65-75.

How old is it?

No official age statement. The profile suggests a young NAS (under 10 years), which is typical for Kilchoman’s core range. The distillery doesn’t disclose exact ages for NAS bottlings.

What’s the cask recipe?

70% Oloroso sherry hogsheads, 30% bourbon barrels. (Source)

Chill-filtered or natural colour?

Non-chill filtered and natural colour. Integrity bottling preserves oils and flavour.

Machir Bay or Sanaig?

Machir Bay: lighter, citrus, everyday drinking (£48-52). Sanaig: richer, fruity, special occasions (£56-58). Most should own both.

Better than Ardbeg Uigeadail?

Different. Uigeadail is cask strength (54.2%), more complex, costs £70. Sanaig is more approachable at 46%, costs £57. Uigeadail wins on intensity. Sanaig wins on everyday value.

The Bottom Line

Kilchoman Sanaig delivers premium sherried Islay quality for £47. The sherry-peat marriage is expertly balanced, the integrity bottling preserves character, and the independent distillery story adds authenticity.

At current pricing, it occupies a sweet spot between everyday Islay malts (£40-50) and premium bottles (£70+). The quality justifies the price, the awards confirm performance, and availability means you can actually find it.

For buyers seeking sherried peat without premium prices, this is among the best options available.

My recommendation: Buy at £57 or less.

Rating: 8.5/10
